I have to say how much I will always admire him for his love of music and struggling on through in spite of physical problems and illness. His passion was so obviously bigger than his illnesses. Always a kind and helpful responder on the board too...I can't say I know him past the confines of the net, but I admire him and will miss his personality and contributions here. I hope his family is doing ok...sending prayers their way.

Sad News

I was just alerted (that doesn't seem to be the right word somehow) that member Rich Dissmore just passed away. He had a heart attack. As many of you know he was recovering from a major stroke he suffered about 10-11 yrs. ago.

He was a good country guitar player before the stroke, and fooled around with bass and other instruments too. He played in a lot of bands that he put together or collaborated with lots of his musical buddies.

When he decided to try to learn fiddle, he looked me up to teach him. He was a pretty good student, caught on quickly to what I showed him. After the stroke he still wanted to try to play music. He was doing a lot of the rehab you'd expect to have to go through. To play guitar, he had to construct a pick out of a credit card (so it'd be big enough for him to hold onto). He also tried to resussitate his fiddle playing. But it became clear to me that what he really needed was a physical therapist who could play fiddle. I wasn't it. He got so frustrated when I told him I was at the limit of my ability to work with him, that I didn't hear from him directly for a year. I knew he was just having a hard time with this whole physically-limiting problem, so I didn't take it personally. He did eventually resume communication with me.

As he actively blogged here, he kept up with his efforts to play music. Then he got cancer. He went through at least one round of treatment, which I gathered from an email he sent me that he'd just completed. He wrote me he was going to try to be at a nearby jam at the end of the month...

No Lyme Disease

We have too much traffic here, a few million too many people, too many ugly buildings and concreted and asphalted over parking lots, too much sprawl (ya'll),

But we ain't got no Lyme Disease.

We don't have it in our fields

Nor on our windshields,

It doesn't occupy our grasses

Nor bite us in our...shins,

We may walk in the hills

Or walk just for thrills,

Hike through the trees,

Sniffing at the breeze,

And our minds (alleged) will be at ease,

For we've no Lyme Disease.

Any other Rv'ers on this Forum?

Are there any other Rv'er's on this Forum who love to camp and play music?

My husband and I have a 27 ft Rv with a couple of slides. It's not new but very comfortable. We have graduated from a 20 ft Class B camper van which was a lot of fun when we were younger. We love to go to Music Festivals and camp with friends - especially music friends.

There's nothing more fun than sitting round a campfire and jamming under the stars:) Barb

Who've You Seen/Heard Live?

Which musician currently do you enjoy seeing/hearing/feeling, smell...(uh...let's just go with the former shall we)...live. I'm lucky in that I can traipse on down to my local pubs and find this lady playing a few feet from me. Here's my friend Kathy Barwick playing "Angelina the Baker":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJfUI1OJCqA

Moreover, I've the Sutter Creek Theatre a few miles down the road which has featured Alisdair Fraser, and the Honey Dewdrops:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Md95ZYMquR0

And I sat in a few times at the local Celtic session with FHO member and great Celtic fiddler, Linda Relph:

Mother's favorite song

To all mothers "Happy mothers day" My mother has been gone for eleven years. I was fortunate in that, I happened to learn her favorite song "In The Garden" and had played it for her prior to her death. Today, whenever I play that song I feel a speacial connection to mom. Consequently, I tell all young musicians that even though they play for auditoriums full of cheering fans or plaly for some great influentual person; the greatest audience will be their mother. So I challenge them to learn their mothers favorite song and play it for her.

Our Last Transit Of Venus

An all around cool video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LP8QFR9Qvc

"Composer and musician William Zeitler performs his original 'Our Last Transit of Venus' for Glass Armonica and Orchestra. William composed the piece especially for the occasion of the Transit of Venus 2012.

Interesting to note is that the Glass Armonica was invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1761 which was also a year of a Transit of Venus!"

Never knew such an instrument even existed.

...enjoy!

the Orange Blossom Special

I can't do it on fiddle, and I admire anyone who can. That's my very distant goal--learn OBS. Maybe in about 10 years I'll have it down! But if I can't play it on fiddle, I can play it--on guitar and harmonica. Here's a video of me doing it! http://s1310.photobucket.com/user/LCKrisher/media/OrangeBlossomSpecial_zps8e1007f3.mp4.html?sort=3&o=0

The Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival runs from May 16 - 19 at the Granite Hill Camping Resort near Gettysburg, PA. Boasting as fine a lineup as you could ask for, Gettysburg is one of the great American festivals. For fiddlers,it will be a feast. Come on out.

I'm watching the Red Sox vs the Astros right now. Its Maine Day at Fenway. Looks like its a lot nicer day in Boston than here.

musical curiosities

Anyone recognize the instrument below ? No makers marks or labels, body is only ~1" thick, 31 harp strings, 5 strings over the fingerboard, frets are about 4.5 mm tall. I found it in an antique shop in southeast Ohio that also had stacks of 78 rpm records from eastern Europe (polkas, polish/yugoslav (?) titles).

Also found an old autoharp at a flea market near Pittsburgh, had two very interesting finger picks ! I wouldn't have recognized the spiral item as a finger pick except for the pictures in the well-preserved manual.

Yep, today is World Tai Chi Day. I seem to remember several folks here into Tai Chi. So, so I thought I'd throw it out there.

http://www.worldtaichiday.org/

Me and my wife spent the morning at a Tai Chi day event. Did our form, watched some demos and took some mini classes. Tai Chi and Qigong can work wonders on back and shoulder pain that seems to plague a lot of fiddlers.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (loves coffee)

Some of you have read Stieg Larsson's trilogy about " The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo"..The second book is titled "The Girl Who Played With Fire", and the third is called "The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest". Here is what I found while reading the books. About half way through the second book I became aware that the author was using the word "coffee" very often. He used it often enough to get me attention. So, while reading the third book, I actually made a little chart and noted just how often the work 'coffee' came up. As it turn out, he used it 101 times in the third book. I can only conclude two things from this fact. 1) Stieg Larsson is a master at weaving a story, and 2) the people in Sweden love coffee. Read this trilogy if you want to be amazed by a good story.

My daughter is showing an interest in playing concertina, but is still on the fence. I don't want to spend a fortune on something that might be a passing fancy. I know others here probably have IAD (instrument acquisition disorder) like me.

I have a 5 string fiddle or a bowl back mandolin I'm willing to trade or I can make a wooden simple system keyless flute in whatever wood, design or key for trade.

We had one that still came around before we left the mts. My daughter remembers...sometimes you walk out of the grocery store and see the crowd around the preacher on a white horse, preaching and throwing out pamphlets...crowd of people standing and watching. An atmosphere that seemed exciting.,,a little bit of a thrill in your Saturday morning grogginess! Lol...I wonder if there are still any left????

Cajun chord structure

I wasn't sure if I should put this in playing advice or here, but I guess it's not quite about fiddling. Are there any rules of thumb for determining chords in cajun tunes? They hang on chords way longer than I expect and then, all of a sudden, they've changed and I didn't see it coming. It works, it sounds right, but what is it? My reason is that if I can tell the guitar players the changes, they'll play the tunes with me. If I leave them stumbling around trying to figure out chords for themselves, they get them wrong a lot and the tune is a jam buster. I'm learning tunes directly from recordings, but I'm not a guitarist, so I can't ID the chords the way some can. I just wish I could find an accordion player.

To Which Old Timey Band...

...have you listened in the last week?

Bigfoot. These guys played the dances at the Father's Day Festival, knocking my socks off! I danced. My daughter danced and had one of the best times ever. These twin fiddlers just DRIVE the tunes. This band also headlined the Saturday night spot at the Father's Day Festival last June.

(My former compadres in the local BG community here did not like these guys because they weren't BG and so on and on ad infinitum.)

If you haven't listened to any Old Time in the last week, then there's something desperately wrong with you.

To Which Newgrass Band have you...

...listened in the last week?

Deadly Gentlemen. My daughter took lessons from the mandolinist, my son the guitarist, of this band. We then saw them perform at the last Father's Day Festival in Grass Valley and my family liked them a lot.

(My former compadres in the BG community here did not like them at all, incidentally, claiming they were not BG yada yada yada.)

Oh--and if you don't like "Newgrass," then you haven't listened to any in the last week, right, so there's no reason to comment on how Newgrass ain't Bill Monroeish and doesn't have the feeling of The Flogging Bloody Backsided Boys from Jerkwater, Arkansas, etc. (Yet there will probably be somebody....)

Wit and humour are clues also. Chest beating and challenging are also clues.. IdleHands never seems to show anger or discouragement. Those are clues also...Maybe he/she will give additional clues ( they will probably be decoys to throw me off).. I'll need help from the rest of the Hangout members..
Anybody had left hand finger cramping from playing guitar???

I've been having problems with my left index finger the last week.
I know there are quite a few of you who also play guitar, and I wonder if any of you have
experienced anything like the following.

After talking about it Sunday afternoon with a trained pianist who has had various finger
problems,
and doing some internet searching, I think what I am dealing with in my left index finger
is mostly cramping. Almost exactly the same thing happened to me in 1990, and I didn't
know what it was, and I thought I couldn't play guitar anymore, and traded off a good
guitar!!!

I think what happens is that when I play too much steel string acoustic guitar, my index
finger gets over-fatigued and starts cramping. (and I did this at a bluegrass jam last
month- since there were 2 fiddlers there, I opted for playing guitar) THEN, once it
starts cramping and knotting up, if I play something with lots of barre chords (which I
did at the gig Friday that triggered the worst of it- barre chords are the one where the
index gets stretched out flat across the string), the strings are pushing into this hard
knot of muscle, and the pain is awful, and triggers more cramping, and at that point it
gets to be a "vicious circle".

Anyway, I've been soaking the hand in hot water at least once a day, and it seems to be
helping. Yesterday morning I woke up with quite a bit of pain, today I woke up with
little to none- however, feeling for it, I can feel a little knot in the muscle right
near the joint.

Another thing that is making me pretty sure it's cramping is that I'm prone to it in
other places in my body as well- I fairly often get "charley horses" in my legs
at night from stretching, and occasionally under my chin when I yawn!

Potassium deficiency shouldn't be the problem since I take a potassium supplement.
Magnesium deficiency is also listed as a cause- I took a magnesium supplement before bed-
perhaps that's the reason why I'm relatively pain free this morning.
Oh yeah... I'm also trying to supplement my Vitamin B6 to strengthen the nerve sheaths
and make them less sensitive- that helped get me out of a bad carpal tunnel attack in
1991.

The good news is that I've noticed that playing fiddle is much easier on the fingers than
guitar, and I will probably focus on that for most of the gigs, and banjo, which also has pretty wimpy
strings, and the few barre chords don't involve the problem joint.

My vitumbua pan is coming tomorrow!

If you haven't tried African foods, you're missing one f the worlds best kept secrets. Good, good stuff...although without getting really sick from wheat several years ago, I probably wouldn't have stumbled onto anything African. Look up YouTubes on vitumbua...yum. Plus you can alter it easily to be much more versatile ... Now I just hope I have the time and energy left to mess around with it tomorrow night!

Mandolin Chop in OT?

I ventured over to the mad (blasted Backspace!!!! Let's try again.) mandolin hangout and there's a discussion there about chopping a mando to the OT tunes (amongst other things). I contend that if done, the beat should be on the 1 and 3. Am I wrong?

Since January 1, I have been sole owner of K C Fiddles, so Eric kindly allowed me to change my user name to KCFiddles. Woodwiz was sadly out of date anyway, since it related to something I did years ago.

I've been cheating on my wife

This is a good place for a Hangout Comeout… No, not That way, not that there is anything wrong with That… I’m here to confess that I’ve been cheating on my wife. Yes, it’s true.

The love of my live has beautiful brown skin and I play with her every chance I get. When the grandkids come over she hides behind the couch..My wife knows all about her and seems tolerant.. Guess that the love of my life keeps me out of my wife’s hair.

My love is beautiful.. Nice tight waist, bottom a little bigger than her top. At her very top,,, lots of curls.. She sings to me if I treat her right and when I ignore her she gives me the silent treatment. (She is getting a little old in that she was born in 1933. I can live with that).

She doesn’t eat much. Actually, she is a cheap date…Never have to spent much money on her, and she goes without complaint , and with my wife’s permission, to all of my favorite jams and festivals…

I’ve been a real gentleman and have never actually slept together.. You see, we are not married.

She knows how I feel whenever I play music and reflects the mood of my soul. What more could I ask of the love of my life?

Sadly, I’ve never known her name.. At one time she had a tattoo that said Made in Japan.. It was probably a typo and should have read Maid in Japan.. So, I know that she is Japanese and she may have been a Maid in an earlier life...She looked a little beat up when I got her. Her origin, being in Japan, could explain why she is very short and was attracted to my kids when they took Suzuki violin lessons..

	Sigh,,,,,, I love my violin.
