I picked up this version from a recording of the legendary black stringband Gribble, Lusk, and York. I love John Lusk's fiddling-- awesome rhythm and a ton of bowing variations! I highly recommend "Altamont - Black Stringband Music from the LIbrary of Congress" for a couple of amazing OT acts. They were called "the best square dance band in five counties" for good reason! http://www.amazon.com/Altamont-Black-Stringband-Library-Congress/dp/B0000002I3/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1328690463&sr=8-1

Two Nice Reels

Two reels that are close to my heart - I feel like they represent me as much as the people who taught me.

In fact I was recording The Irish Washerwoman and I wasn't happy with the takes so I recorded two tunes that I enjoy. It sounded so much better. Just simple one track recording with a touch of 'verb to fatten it up a bit.

	Hope you enjoy

Randy Howard was one of the really great fiddle players and passed away way to early. But he left behind wonderful compositions such as this 'Golden Fiddle Waltz'. I love his way with the harmonies. It is an honor and privilege to play his music.

Oyster Girl

Been quite while since I posted anything, but I sure enjoy reading through the fiddle hangout.

I first heard this on Vol 1 of Billy Mathews' 500 fiddle tune project a few years ago, and liked it right away. But I put off giving it a try until about a week before last, partially because I had heard him wrong on the cd and thought it was in G, rather than D. For some reason I revisited it, and gave it a try. I enjoyed it, but didn't spend much time.

I also wondered where Billy had got it. I thought that the Fiddlers Companion didn't have a listing, but I must have done my search wrong because I find it now. Anyway, when searching YouTube, I got either an English Jig by that name (a nice version by two accordions at the the Hong Kong Folk Society, which sure looks like a fun group) and a slightly bawdy song. Neither of those sounded anything like what Mathews was playing, as far as I could tell.

Then last week the folks at slippery-hill.com announced that they had put up recordings of all the tunes in Vol 1 of The Old-Time Fiddler's Repertory by R.P. Christeson and in looking that over, number 86 is Oyster Girl played by Bob Walters. Walters plays in his wonderful notey Missouri hornpipe style, but I have to say that I enjoy the danceable quality of Billy's version.

So, here is my version of Billy's version. It's also the first time I've videoed myself on fiddle. I was surprised when I could make it through three times without crashing.

I'm trying a little more Bluegrass style in this video. I love bluegrass, but really don't fiddle it much..(I play mandolin for that, or guitar)..but I hope to be able to do a little Bluegrass fiddle some day to at least play fiddle in a couple of small jams here and there.

Anyway, as always comment, complaints and criticisms welcome, I'm just charting my progress... (and I realize, I'm playing waaay faster in this video then I should..sorry..)

Does anyone know of a "chart" or a "hair count" for different bow sizes and types? 1/8 - 4/4 violin, viola, cello, and bass bows. None of my resourses contain this info. "Thanks a Hank".

Here's a clip of me & my son sitting around the house last week (should've straightened up a little first). I realize the tune is fast but he's young and full of vinegar (15) so I let him cut loose. Please feel free to let us know what you think. I realize the note clarity is not on due to the speed ( He can play it slower). He's going to his first fiddle competition this summer so I'd like to get a little input on his playing. His fiddle guru's right now are Liz Carrol, Lester McCumber, and Tommy Jarrels. Please disregard the guitar backup, I was just trying to keep up! Thanks in advance for any and all feedback.

Callahan (Clyde Davenport)

My Music section is starting to look like a Clyde Davenport retrospective... he may be my favorite solo fiddler. I lean heavily towards rhythmic bowing with lots of syncopation and swing, but Clyde isn't really all about that. Regardless, his notey, reedy, crooked tunes get stuck in my head more than anyone else's. This one's called Callahan. Clyde throws a crooked hiccup of sorts into the B section when he feels like it, I tried to keep that in my rendition of the tune. Hope you like it!

Little Rock Getaway- slow

I've been working on this tune for 6 months on and off. It has been very challenging.

The guitar backup alone has been tough to learn. My fingers get all tangled up, even at this slow speed. As far as the fiddle... well, I'm still working on the bowing and intonation. My goal is to be able to play this tune smoother and up to speed with better intonation by the end of 2012. I welcome any critical feedback from folks who can play this one smoothly. I've reached a stage where I'm not making much progress on it. It's frustrating.

	Dave

Note: I edited to add a digitally sped-up link of this same recording. This is the speed I'd like to get to. Any help appreciated.

Cyril Stinnett's "Threshing Tune"

Here's a tune I learned of by joining the Milner/Koken TOTM on Facebook. Having a Missouri tune right when I joined hooked me right away.

A tune from Cyril Stinnett called "Threshing Tune".

Golden Slippers- Old Time

This is my take on Golden Slippers:

	http://www.fiddlehangout.com/myhangout/music.asp?id=486&musicid=9484&ie6fix=1#addcomment

(edited to add forgotten link- thanks DougD!!!)(edited again to make it the link to the corrected version!)

I perform it quite a bit in senior's facilities, but I've being playing it, and pretty much these notes since the early '70's.

I like the tune a lot, and I've never gotten tired of it, makes a great fiddle tune, IMO.

The bowing has changed quite a bit though... like most of my tunes, there's no Nashville Shuffle in it. I use 3-3-1-1 as an opening lick, and quite a few Syncoshuffles where the melody sounds like it should syncopate. Not sure what else.... Sawshuffle, if anything.

I'm using my Heil mics, PR-35 on the top, and PR-30 on the back, into my PV6 USB mixer, into Audacity running on Linux Mint. No effects.

	http://lifespan.venturaassociates.net/gallerydetails.php?vid=145

	(1) The validation email link doesn’t work (at least it hasn’t for us now or in the past voting for others)
(2) the part that IS highlighted will take you to a page that says “Thank you for your interest. We have validated your vote previously.” and your vote will NOT count!
(3) if you copy and paste everything IN between < and > (including the final “}” which doesn’t look hot-linked), you will get “Thank you for validating your vote.” and the vote tally changes immediately for the song of your choice.

I'm working on this tune trying to get rid of some of the mistakes here and there, But I thought I would record it and get it on here so Its a start back on that bike for me, Hopefully I will stick with it this time

Who's coming to the Virtual Fiddling Festival? Feb 2012

Where?... right here, of course, on this Sound Off Forum. Yes, yes, believe it or not, now, for the low, low price of two easy payments, of .... not 99.99, not even 9.99, but actually no easy payments of anything, because it's free... the Free Virtual Fiddling Festival. Well ya know I like Free stuff, so I'll be there, er HERE... and here's the deal: Since we are a virtual festival, we plan to have a virtual jam, mp3's, videos, youtubes, however you can get your fiddling to come across so we can enjoy it from the comforts of our own living rooms or porches. This is a call to fiddling, working on one tune per month... really work at it ... share at our jam on or before February 15th, at which point we'll choose another tune to play. This month's tune will be Did You Ever See the Devil, Uncle Joe/ Miss Mcleod's Reel, or even anything similar that suits your style that you'd like to share with us'uns right here at the virtual festival. I even plan to get up a youtube of the skeletal gist of the tune as I understand it, and just as if we were sitting together under a big ol' weeping willer by the creekside with a drink about to topple over beside me and an ol' panting dog, I might just share what I'd LIKE to be able to do with the tune if I can practice at it, in a couple of youtubes before the final version is posted, on or before February 15th. Sound complicated? Well if it does I said it all wrong...lol... just play the tune with us, think about it and practice up and play it as good as you can for us by Feb 15th, 2012, and then we'll pick a new one. We are picking tunes from this site for now: http://www.oldtimejam.com/Jam.html , since it's very user friendly and has a lot of popular tunes on it. You can find Uncle Joe in the G tunes on that site if you need to hear it, want backup support, etc. Otherwise, do it your own way, however you like. Within the next couple of days I will get a youtube up of my beginning thoughts as I try to work up something to contribute by 2-15.

Stay Tuned... get your fiddles out... no cheating... make us a new one and play it different than you did before!!! (or cheat and use the old one if you have one... it's just all for fun and to motivate ourselves to work at getting better!)

I recently had a personal triumph when I completed my year and a half long project and uploaded all 27 ballads on Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music. Here is a link to that The Anthology of American Folk Music Vol. 1: Ballads

I have now started working on Volume 2: Social Music and this afternoon I recorded and uploaded the first fiddle tune in the Anthology Sail Away Ladies.

Not good, no time, and rushed although lazy playin', then my foot fell asleep and I almost fell down standing back up to turn off the ipad recorder... but anyway... I got the doggone tune up, even if it is a day late... one of these days I'll get it all together. By the way... I think my fiddle is kinda mad at me for never playing much.... took it outta the case this morining and it was way wacky out of tune all over the place... I have no fine tuners so I did a little bit of cranking on those pegs before settin' out for this one... ha ha... gotta get back into that fiddling, one way or another! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V32hbXS5EjA

Update: Yesterday I recorded a group arrangement of this same tune. I'll add it below. The group arrangement has tracks for fiddle, guitar, three vocals, and handclaps. Sounds best through headphones. Fun!

Well, a week or so ago marked 3 years of playing the fiddle. A friend of mine from Oklahoma and I wrote this tune for mandolin a while back, and finally I can come pretty close to playing it on the fiddle. Sounds like that's where it belongs to me.
