For Sale: Fine German viola from Klingenthal, Saxony, 19th century - €2,500 EUR ($3,273.50 USD)

Stringed instruments from the traditional violin making village Klingenthal in Saxony are famous for their colorful and complex sound properties, and especially Klingenthal violas are rare pieces for demanding musicians. The piece offered here was built in the mid-19th century and reflects traditional craftsmanship at its finest: Gentle fluting, skilfully accented margins and delicate purfling determine its beautiful antique appearance, that is completed by typical yellow-brown varnish with interesting patina and some traces of use. The viola is offered in excellent condition and was meticulously set up by our experienced luthiers, who made sure that the small repair of some 1.5 cm along the right upper rib was done properly. This viola is one of the smaller of its kind with 38.2 cm in length, and unfolds its balanced voice that is warm, bright and silvery in its character - immediately ready to play!

For Sale: Martin 000-15S 12-Fret Slothead Guitar, Year 2000 SOLD - $850 USD

FOR SALE: a year 2000 Martin 000-15S, 12-Fret Slothead, Solid Mahogany, 1 and ¾” nut width, 25.4” scale, serial number 754942.
I purchased this guitar from FQMS in Fall, 2000, and had them install a bone saddle. I currently own too many other acoustic guitars – several high end -- and have not played this one often. Over the years, I did have my local music store install a piezo (passive) transducer under the soundboard with an endpin jack and replaced the original bridge pins with “red-eye” bridge pins. Additionally, I used the procedure described on the Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum to give just the body (nothing to the neck or headstock) of the guitar a semi-gloss finish (spent a lot of time on this), and it turned out very well. The setup/action is currently low, as I prefer it that way for fingerstyle playing (I’m not a flatpicker at all). The guitar has one small flaw (see picture in link below) on the back lower edge (where binding would normally be and which I normally keep covered / disguised with just a small bit of brown shoe polish) and a very small nudge on the top, about 1” below the bridge. Other than that, it is in exceptional shape. Comes with the original hardshell case that fits snug because of the installed endpin jack.
I’ve included a couple of photos here, and for complete pictures, see the site at http://dthmartin00015s.shutterfly.com/pictures/12 ..
$850 plus shipping (I’ll pay for the insurance). Paypal or Cashier’s Check. Or would consider buyer’s trade of an Eastman VL105 / Morgan Monroe MVF400 / H. Luger CV500 or comparable Fiddle plus cash.

This 15.5" viola is in excellent condition, with no scratches. It has a golden pecan color and a flameback design. I've been playing this instrument for many years in symphony and orchestra and I'm ready to switch to playing bluegrass fiddle, but I have been very satisfied with this viola.
This beautiful instrument is appropriate for the intermediate to advanced musician. It resonates with a mellow sweet sound.

For Sale: 1931 Martin 1-17 12 fret guitar SOLD - $0 USD

1931 Martin 1-17 12 fret guitar with HSC $2000 +shipping. VGC and a real nice playing and sounding guitar. It's all original as far as I know. The frets show moderate wear and the neck angle is not perfect. I keep it tuned a step low. It has a very well repaired crack in the upper bass side and a dime sized burn nearby. It has nicks and dings but not excessive. The V shaped neck has moderate smooth wear from playing.

These photos give you a good idea of the cosmetic appearance of the guitar:

I've owned this one for about 25 years and it is in about the same condition as when I received it; well-played and well-loved! If you have any questions please ask. I don't think you'll be disappointed with it. I know I sure wasn't!

For Sale: Benny Martin&#39s 1942 Martin 000-45 guitar - $60,000 USD

Benny Martin's 1942 Martin 000-45 is available.
In 1942, as Benny was beginning to get involved in music on a professional level, his Father purchased and gifted Benny with this Martin 000-45. From 1942 until about 1965 this was, in Benny’s words - his ‘main guitar’, the one he used for most of his personal appearances and recordings like ‘Ice Cold Love’, ‘Lover Of The Town’, and ‘Old London Town’ to name just a few. In the early 1960s Benny had the bridge repaired and the guitar refinished by a Nashville based repairman whom he referred to as ‘Gower’. Curiously Grandpa Jones and Earl Scruggs had this same repairman refinish their prewar 000-45s around the same time: It’s easy to see that this work was done by the same luthier at about the same time, as the finish on all three guitars is identical, with ‘checking’ and ‘crazing’ resembling a vintage Gibson finish. Around 1965 a dispute with the IRS prompted Benny to sell his prized guitar to one of his best friends.
The 2nd owner of the 000-45 was a devoted friend to Benny (he was with Benny the day he died) and was dedicated to keeping the guitar just like it was when he acquired it from Benny, so for about 45 years the 000-45 was seldom ever out of the case, and played very little.
In the October of 2010 the 2nd owner of the guitar suffered a heart attack. Numerous complications kept him hospitalized for many months until his passing in February, 2011. Reluctantly his family has decided to sell this incredibly rare Martin that also happens to be a bona-fide piece of authentic American Music history.
I count myself most fortunate indeed to have been a friend of Benny’s after I moved to Madison, Tennessee in the late 1980s. Benny was a regular guest in our home, and many times I’ve heard him talk about his 000-45. On more than one occasion Benny said that one of the things he regretted most was having to sell his Martin, obviously because his Dad had given it to him, but mostly because ‘it was the best damn guitar’ he’d ever had in his hands. I’m also blessed beyond measure to have been a friend to the gentleman Benny entrusted the care of his guitar with, and remain close with his family, who asked that I assist them in the sale of the guitar.
Having spent much of the past 45 years in the case, the guitar was in need of some attention. Master luthier Robin Smith did a thoroughly exemplary job of re-setting the neck and setting the guitar up. Benny’s praise of the guitar rang so true with me the day I picked it up from Robin’s shop: I was astounded that a guitar that had been dormant for 45 years could sound this great. It has all the volume and ability to project that the very best of the best prewar D-28s have, but where many of the great ‘D’ size guitars tend to be ‘boomy’, this guitar is purely resonate and balanced. Tonally, to my ear-it has the depth and presence of a top shelf D-28, with the brilliance and balance of the best of the vintage D-18s.
Qualified interested parties are welcome to contact me to arrange for a visit with this extraordinary guitar.
Thanks for looking!

For Sale: Italian viola from Naples, crafted approx. 1930 - €4,000 EUR ($5,237.60 USD)

This Italian viola is a really amazing piece, a large instrument with a body length of 41.4 cm, crafted approx. 1930 of beautiful tonewoods with interesting, unconventional texture. Unmistakably Italian appearance, with soundholes that are cut in a very characteristical shape, a dominant, large scroll and soft, orange-brown varnish. The great acoustic qualities of this viola match extremly well to its provenance. It features a floating, light and open voice that is more than recommendable, precise and perfectly balanced across the strings. We offer this rare quality instrument in undamaged, excellent condition, completely checked by our luthier, in immediate playing condition.

For Sale: Banjolin aka Banjo Mandolin for sale - $275 USD

This is an 8 string Banjolin. It plays well. Setup and neck setting was done by Jane Gilday (janepaints on the hangout.) The wood bridge currently on it is a bit chewed up looking but seems to work fine. Original bone bridge, in good condition, is included as well. Inside the skin head is inked "Ashber G. Snyder, November 20th, 1929" in fountain pen script. The metal rim measures approximately 11.5 inches in diameter and the total length is 24 inches. Main structural wood is maple. Frets appear to be in reasonable condition.

Everything on this banjolin appears to be original. The head is real skin, and is in very good condition. There don't appear to be any parts missing whatsoever. The tuners, though original, work well and turn smoothly.

I currently have it set up with only 4 strings, but the other 4 in the set will be included in the sale.

Why am I selling it? I've had it for months and picked it up exactly three times, and played it for around five minutes each time. Short answer? It's not a fiddle. Even after hearing how unbelievably cool an almost identical banjolin sounded playing oldtime with the Ether Frolic Mob a couple weeks ago, I don't pick it up. Even though it's got a GREAT plinky sound that is perfect for oldtime, I don't pick it up.

It comes with its original pressboard case, which works adequately, but I wouldn't trust it to be all that protective.

If shipped via parcel post in the lower 48 of the US, shipping will definitely be less than 20 bucks. If interested, email me and include your location and I'll calculate the shipping for you.

I am told this is an early to mid fifties vintage. It has had some old repairs and you can see liutier done cleats that repaired a couple of cracks on the top on either side of the fingerboard and have now oxidized with age. It could use a pickguard. current one is just starting to lift. Recently set up to finger pick with bone nut and saddle...previously flatpicked in a string band setting. Comes with a Fort EPCC Tric case. At this price, shipping is on the buyer. Email me. If your are really serious, send a phone number, I will call and we can talk directly.
