Volume 1, the first 100, has been out for about a year and a half now, and Volume 2, the second 100, has been out for about a year, and now Billy has completed work on Volume 3, the third 100. Each volume consists of 3 CDs, containing 100 fiddle tunes per volume, for a total of five volumes. A book containing all the tunes, written in notation, will follow. Billy says the name of the tune and tuning he plays it in, then plays each tune not too fast, not too slow, for 2-3 minutes each. These are great learning tools, as well as easy listening. Nonetheless, until now, there has never been a sound recording focusing on the presentation of songs and tunes from Irish Quebec. Here at last is a CD and pdf booklet which document a portion of the dance music and ballads which have enlivened neighboring villages north of Quebec City which were settled in large part by Irish immigrants in the early (pre-famine) 1800s. Ireland in Québec features the accordion playing of Keith Corrigan (b. 1933) of Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier and the fiddling and singing of Jimmy Kelly (b. 1934) of Shannon. Backing them up on fiddle, guitar, and piano are myself, André Marchand, and Nick Hawes. Ireland in Quebec won the 2008 Prix Mnémo, the annual prize accorded to the best traditional arts documentary/research production of the year. Ireland in Québec includes 22 instrumental tunes and four songs along with a booklet and photographs. It also includes a 63- page printable pdf file with musical transcriptions for 27 tunes from the repertoire of Keith's father, Patrick Corrigan, choreographies for the Valcartier Lancers and Set, biographies of the musicians, histories of Valcartier and Shannon, songs lyrics, extensive liner notes, and a lovely essay by the late Bernard Monaghan, a traditional musician from Valcartier, about music and dancing in his boyhood. A set of my favorite Missouri fiddle tunes is presented. Accompaniment is provided by Emily and Dennis Buckhannon on piano and guitar. They did a bang-up job on this recording. The original session was recorded by Barry Bergey at R. P. Christeson's house in Auxvasse, MO, in 1981. "RP" was on hand to provide encouragement and advice on the best tempo for each tune. He wanted to make sure that the tunes were played at square dance speed and I believe we achieved this to both his and our own satisfaction. The recording appeared on the 1987 Library of Congress Select List of Folk Recordings. I hope you enjoy this reissue of classic "Possum" fiddling. Except for the first seven tracks of volume 1 (myself & Fred Campeau playing a dance in Chicago), I play all of the instruments. Some seem like they might be complete, some not. And I will do my best to make sure all the 1st Trumpet bits that were yanked out are restored (I wonder what instrument the original owner played? :-) ) All were stored in a basement. Condition varies, and some are dry/brittle. Most date from the 1940's and 50's and most seem to be stuff a Swing Band or Dance Band would play, with some other stuff, like show tunes, also tucked in there. There are definitely some interesting titles. Some have violin parts, some not. Some that don't have violin parts do have flute parts, so you can get clever with this stuff. I see this stuff as being fun if you're looking for new and different material for a Swing Band. There are some interesting tunes in here. Price starts at a buck a title and drop from there, with generous discounts for quantity and/or iffy condition. Shipping will depend on the quantity you take. Please indicate titles you have an interest in, and I'll send you info on condition and what's parts are in those titles, as well as a price with shipping.
