For Sale: Fine Leon Mougenot Violin, 1951 - $10,000 USD

This Mougenot violin is a very fine example of Mirecourt work from a maker who provided instruments to some of the best shops. This one comes from later in his career, but unlike so many of his peers, does not show any loss of proficiency in its execution.

Mougenot had an easily recognizable varnish and antiquing style for the majority of his work, and this violin displays that. For many of his violins, Mougenot used a golden amber, but for this one he added some red in a very tasteful manner.

It has a warm and broad tone that’s quite pleasant. It responds easily but is also forgiving. It has an excellent certificate from Hugues Paumier. The violin will be shipped in a lightweight case unless a different option is requested. Bows are available as well, either by request or through listings on this site.

IMHO most trade Stainer violins DO NOT sound good. This violin has been reworked by a well known local Luthier. Please don't ask, I'm not a name dropper. No hyperbole or over the top descriptions. Simply stated, sounds pretty good and it will make a great Old time fiddle.

For Sale: Fine Hermann Todt Violin, 1920 - $7,000 USD

This is a fine instrument that showcases the work of one the best Markneukirchen shops during one of Germany’s greatest eras in making. This particular instrument has been owned and played for years by a jazz violinist in the DC area. All of his violins were chosen for their tone.

It has a solidly repaired crack on the lower bout of the top (not in the soundpost area) but is otherwise free of structural damage. You can see some wear to the varnish from plenty of playing, although a good deal of the look is the antiquing.

It was made in 1920 for the William Lewis shop in Chicago, as stated on the label. It bears the maker’s brand on the back as well. In 2022 it was appraised for $7500 by Fred Oster in Philadelphia. It was set up in the William Harris Lee workshop in Chicago and still has their bridge.

It has a warm and velvety tone and it’s easy to play. It is a player’s instrument just waiting for its next devotee.

For Sale: Hand Varnished Violin - $750 USD

This is one of three violins I bought as practice varnishing violins for a varnishing and varnish making workshop in 2010. It’s most likely a Chinese violin, but it was sold simply as a “varnish practice instrument,” which means it was made with plain wood without much figure (the prettiness of the wood dictates prices in factories). I stripped it after the workshop and revarnished it with a spirit varnish of my own making. It’s all set for a player who wants a good sounding instrument at an economical price. It has rosewood fittings and a professional setup and revoicing by Maxham Violins.

The violin will come in a GEWA Aspirante case unless a different case is desired. Bows are also available in my other listings or upon request.

For Sale: 1971 E.R. Pfretzschner violin - $500 USD

I have a 1971 ER Pfretzschner violin made in West Germany for sale. It has the solid one piece back. It has the Caspari tuning pegs that hold very well. I never have to touch them. I just adjust the fine tuners every once in awhile. The violin has no cracks. It does have fine scratches that could be gotten out probably with some polish. No deep scratches. It is set up nicely. I think probably more for bluegrass because the action is fairly low. It is a beautiful instrument and it has that old tone to it, not the high pitched noise from cheap fiddles. The violin is structurally solid. Does not come with a bow. Will ship to the lower 48 states. Thanks for looking

For Sale: CD - Chip Cohen, &#34Horsehair&#34 - $9.99 USD

"Fiddlin' talent Chip Cohen has created a musical masterpiece with his album Horsehair. The album is full of beautifully arranged fiddle and guitar instrumental songs, plus some original and some traditional melodies with a twist. My personal favorite is the first track entitled "Yiddish Hillbilly Medley", a delightful mix of old time American and Klezmer dance tunes. Another winner is a swinging guitar rendition of Beethoven's "Fur Elise". The musicianship is impeccable on this recording and it would make a fine addition to anyone's musical collection." --Eugene Weekly

Contents: Yiddish Hillbilly Medley (Appalachian/ Klezmer), Lisette/ Bad Woman (Caribbean), Shevuos/ Shoshanna's Waltz (Cohen), Enchanted Valley (Celtic), Paddy Kelly's Jig/ Timor the Tartar (Celtic), Blind Mary (O'Carolan), Elmo's Rag (Cohen), Fur Elise (Beethoven), Magpie/ Leather Britches (Appalachian), Eastern Star (Greek), Sandunga (Mexican), Songbird Waltz (Cajun)

Sharon Rogers and Chip Cohen breathe new life into old time American music. Sharon plays guitar and banjo and sings with a voice as sweet and clear as mountain spring water, while Chip saws the fiddle, picks the guitar, and provides vocal harmonies. Together they weave their way through an array of Appalachian hoedowns, Irish jigs, and traditional and original folk songs.

Sixteen Appalachian and Celtic fiddle tunes, seven vocal numbers: Whiskey Before Before Breakfast, Temperance Reel, Cold Frosty Morning, Love Farewell, The Butterfly, Drowsy Maggie, Scully's Reel, Maids of 'Selma, Sally Goodin, St. Anne's Reel, Woodchopper's Reel, Rainbow in the Sky, Staten Island Hornpipe, Golden Slippers, Kitchen Girl, Turkey Buzzard, Banish Misfortune, Step Stones, Snug in a Blanket, Mug of Brown Ale, Shepherd's Reel, Oregon Waltz.

“Two of the Northwest’s best all around and most versatile musicians. Sharon’s voice is pure, sweet, and subtly strong. Chip’s fiddle is smooth, tight, and lively, a perfect complement to Sharon’s voice and their well-crafted tunes.” – Eugene Folklore Society

For Sale: Fine Violin by Daniel O. Smith, 2012 - $13,000 USD

This is a fine violin made by Daniel O. Smith in 2012. It has a beautiful birdseye maple back with matching ribs and neck. Like all Smith violins, it is made on the Guarneri del Gesu il Cannone pattern. This one is labeled number 55. It also bears handwritten inscriptions inside. The varnish is a beautiful golden amber oil varnish that brings out the beauty of the wood perfectly.

This violin was very special to the maker, considered by him to be his best work for many years, and he kept it hanging in one of his display cabinets for over a decade before deciding he was ready to sell it. It showcases some of his most exquisite work and has more power than any other Smith violin I’ve played.

It has been professionally set up by Maxham Violins. It will be shipped in a lightweight case unless a different model is desired. Bows are also available on this site and by request.

This is a very good example of Japanese violin making from the early 1900s. It was played and cared for lovingly by a woman who received it as a gift in her childhood and spent her lifetime with it before it was sold to a fiddler who in turn sold it to me in Galax over the summer.

As you can see in the pictures, the condition is near perfect, with only a few signs of wear. It still has its original pegs. It has been professionally set up by Maxham Violins and is in fine playing shape, with a quick response and a clear and even tone.

For Sale: &#34Learning To Fiddle, Bluegrass Style&#34 - $25 USD

Price reduced! Now just $25!

"Learning To Fiddle, Bluegrass Style" is intended for beginning to intermediate violin players and fiddlers who want to learn to play bluegrass style, and can read standard notation, even if only a little. This 225-page coil-bound instruction book can be used by itself as a self-teaching fiddle method, or supplemented by lessons. It covers all the major components of bluegrass fiddle and most importantly teaches students how to dissect songs to create their own bluegrass-style fiddle breaks. Includes two CDs that contain each exercise and tune in the book, played both slowly and up to speed. Song examples are accompanied by a full bluegrass band with the fiddle break played as written in the book, and a place for the student to try their own solos, both slowly and at normal speed.

"Learning To Fiddle, Bluegrass Style" covers patterns and bowings, backup, fills and riffs, double-stops, tune signatures, slides, playing in higher positions and position shifting, pentatonic and blues scales, playing in non-standard keys like B, F and Bb, harmony playing, an introduction to improvisation, and non-melodic breaks. Each of the scores of exercises and examples in the book is accompanied by a detailed explanation in the text, showing the student exactly how each technique is applied. Included are a number of unique diagrams that explain the "shapes" that fiddlers use to improvise breaks and create riffs. Scattered throughout the book are photos of important bluegrass fiddlers, some of which have never been published before. The appendix contains dozens of scale, interval, riff and position-shifting exercises, as well as brief bios of many of bluegrass music's most influential fiddlers.

Bluegrass Unlimited (Nov '14) said. "...a wonderful resource for the serious student of bluegrass fiddle.", and "This is the best book on bluegrass fiddle written so far in this century. Miss it at your own peril."

Order at kdvmusic.com, where you can also view sample pages from the book. We've also posted a few extra fiddle tune transcriptions and some extra sound files that everyone can download, even if you don't buy the book.
