Fiddle: "Booker", mics: Heil PR35 top and PR30 below, panned hard right and left. Odd- the mp3 sounds a bit distorted in the low part, didn't in Audacity... weird! (This is the corrected export with both tracks... the left track is the lower mic and is softer, but it's there!)

Billy Mathews Fiddle Christine Banjo. I first heard this tune from a clip posted from a dance in Southern Illinois, now I can't find that clip. I loved the title and the tune. Recently I was in Springfield, MO for a Heritage Day Festival and Fiddlin' Banjo Billy Mathews and I sat down and played some tunes. Being a festival there is some background noise from vehicles and such. I really enjoy this tune and hope you do to.

Instruments are: Fiddle, tuned (4rd to 1st) D D A D (4th string one octave below 3rd, also used for Bonaparte's Retreat) - and a 4 string Bouzuki bought on the Greek island of Samos a couple of years ago (well, not quite Oldtimey, but it almost sounds like a Mountain Dulcimer). Tunings may not be to 440 standard, as I'm not particular when doing sound-on-sound recordings for fun - as long as the instruments are in tune between them

My friend Bob Graff and I played this in the fiddle-banjo duet contest at the Henry Reed Festival in 2010. As I explained in the whistle version, I had pictured the tune more as a death march or lament. As far as finding a Scottish source, that's gone for naught after three series of attempts. Now I've moved back to playing the tune on the fiddle (in AEAE; actually flattened a bit, as I think my fiddle sounds better when tuned slightly lower, about half-way between A and Ab). In moving it back to the fiddle, it could now be included in the topic on fiddle tunes that sound like bagpipes. I love the exquisite dissonance in the 2nd part. My apologies to Melvin Wine, as I still have removed a beat and made the tune regular and easy to march to.

This, and others put up, date back to 2002, when Steve Schmidt and I first started recording stuff on my Tascam 788. He'd start, using the Wildwood Troubador I subsequently sold him, and so he'd set the pace, and we'd lock into a fairly good groove, tempo wise. This, if memory serves, is the first one we did. I probably put the SM57 in front of the banjo, and I"d likely use the Rode NT1. The fiddle and banjo were done together, first, and I'd come back later and add in, by overdub, whatever else is in there. I've been waiting for the green light on AAC's, but in lieu of that, I converted an AAC to MP3. I think the AAC's have better quality, but, what the hey. I hope converting an MP3 from AAC is no worse than converting an MP3 from an AIFF, which I normally do, if working MP3, but I loaded this CD all AAC, so have no AIFF's of it.
