<title>New Tango No. 1: Movement</title>
<itunes:author>Roger Aldridge</itunes:author>
<author>Roger Aldridge</author>
<link>http://www.fiddlehangout.com/myhangout/music.asp?ID=23160</link>
<itunes:summary>Sorry, no fiddle on this track. However, please imagine the alto sax being a jazz violin. Inspired by the tango, this piece is about dance movement as well as exploring movement between time and free-time. The soloist&#8217;s part is entirely improvised. The rhythm section plays in and out of time. The soloist cues the rhythm section as when to make time/free-time and harmonic shifts. The background ensemble is entirely in free-time with each note conducted. There is a considerable amount of freedom regarding the instrumentation. The soloist conceivability can be any instrument. Ideally, the jazz rhythm section uses accordion (or keyboard with accordion patch), piano and/or guitar, bass, and drums. The background ensemble can have 4 (or multiples of 4) woodwinds, brass, a mix of woodwinds &amp; brass, or strings. The solo section has an open form. The background ensemble can improvise interactions with the soloist. This piece is highly dependant upon the soloist and ensemble to bring the music to life, give it a sense of drama and momentum, and take the audience on a journey. Demo recorded by Jason Shapiro, alto saxophone; Jeff Knoettner, keyboard (strings, accordion); E. Shawn Qaissaunee, guitar; Peter McCarthy, bass; Skip Rohrich, drums.</itunes:summary>

This piece has an emphasis on ensemble improvisation -- intended to have an effect of quickly changing music and radio sounds as one can hear in heavy traffic.

Demo recorded by Jason Shapiro, soprano saxophone; E. Shawn Qaissaunee, guitar; Brian Howell, bass; Skip Rohrich, drums.

NOTE: This piece has improvisation &amp; performance concepts that are not evident in the demo recording. Please follow a copy of the music while listening to the recording. Playing the piece with more funk and edge is encouraged!</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Blues For Lester is not a conventional blues. Rather, it is an exceptionally quirky blending of blues, funk, contemporary jazz, and touches of new music. The piece is an expression of my admiration for Lester Young, the great jazz tenor saxophonist. Especially, for his linear harmonic concepts, quirky ways of playing around with time, and for those moments in his playing that cause my jaw to drop open and laugher to come out in sheer amazement and delight.

The piece was originally conceived as a feature for violin and jazz rhythm section. However, any instruments are welcome to have a go at it.
