Jackson's Favorite, The Connemara Stockings

<itunes:summary>These two tunes are said to be variations on the reel Ships are Sailing They definitely have some similarities in the second part of both tunes. While the inspiration may have come from that reel, I feel they have grown into their own & I think go well together. I got the first one from the playing of Andy McGann who played it as a single reel (most play it as a double) & I got the Connemara Stockings by osmosis.

Jackson was a piper & his tunes are very common in the Co Sligo bag-o-tunes, not sure abot the history of the other one.</itunes:summary>

The Amber Mazurka

<itunes:author>mad baloney</itunes:author>

<itunes:summary>I'm American, but my heritage is both Irish & Lithuanian. I was looking into Lithuanian folk music & which tunes & forms translated over to the Irish music that I play on the fiddle. I took some cues from the Lithuanian folk melodies & quickly came up with this mazurka. I didn't think too much of it at the time, I played it for some of my friends & they said it was a keeper. My friend Jay Gilbert played it at a session as a set with "Sonny Brogan's" http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/5476 one time when I wasn't around & the tune caught the ear of Bob Drouin who heads up many sessions & has passed the tune on to many others. Recently I went to a session I hadn't been to in years & they started to play this tune. So... it's a hit & I thought I'd give it a better rendition than the :30 clip I put on youtube to originally share the tune.

As far as the recording....
I used audacity and a tie-clip condenser mic from radio shack (except for the guitar which I used a dean markley single coil through a mosfet preamp (which I soldered up years ago))

I played all the instruments: fiddle, flute, mandolin & guitar. There's a hint of reverb on the flute & fiddle, I also added a drone and doubled it an octave lower with the magic of audacity.

Hope you enjoy</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>This is a repost of the same viola/mandolin recording I&#39ve had posted since Sept. 2009 but which appears to have become inaccessible somewhere along the line; I&#39m not sure when. Hopefully, this one can actually be listened to. <br>
======================================<br>
I find this melody haunting; one of those tunes that I just can&#39t get out of my mind. This is my arrangement played on my newest toy, a viola (not strictly a fiddle, I guess, but kinda like one; notwithstanding that it feels a little like holding an orange crate under my chin) combined with mandolin and a couple of guitar tracks.</itunes:summary>

This is a repost of the same viola/mandolin recording I&#39ve had posted since Sept. 2009 but which appears to have become inaccessible somewhere along the line; I&#39m not sure when. Hopefully, this one can actually be listened to. <br>

<itunes:summary>My first recording. Originally the verse was played twice followed by two renditions of the chorus. However, the first verse had unwanted noise (from the bow) so I deleted that section and just kept the one verse and both choruses.
I know there is much room for improvement and hopefully this recording will help me identify the areas that need to be improved :)</itunes:summary>
