Sound

This instrument lends itself more towards the low end with the type of richness expected from a beginner instrument and it is advertised as much on the Shar website. It projects well but is not overbearing.

Setup

Setup was fine for a beginner but strings were higher at the nut than would be expected for a custom setup as Shar advertises.

Appearance

The appearance was beautiful and rich with a deeper brown and redish tint to the wood. Spirit varnish used and a moderate shine was apparent.

Reliability

The fingerboard finish wears off in certain areas within just a few weeks of use in first positions but all in all after a few months of everyday use; the intrument has held up wonderfully for its inexpensive price.

Customer Service

I believe there is a 90 days warranty. Shar Music has been very easy to deal with online and I have purchased many other accessories for this outfit from them. Shar also has an excellent trade in/ Trial policy when it is time to upgrade and if you are not "in Love" with your first instrument.

Components

The tiny block of Shar dark rosin could be improved upon having been included in the Etude outfit I purchase and one of the case zippers sticks at times. Other than those two things; this is a fine outfit for a beginner to start with and was recommended by my Bluegrass teacher before it was purchased.

Excellent quality, beauty and playability important in a first Instrument at a very modest Price for an Outfit.

Sound

It's very mellow and kind of dark. It serves well as an orchestral instrument, but don't except some overly bright fiddle. It doesn't choke on the upper positions, but its just not quite what I want. Its a student violin so be sure to gauge your expectations.

Setup

The violin was less than half a turn out of tune. Its bridge was carefully aligned with the fingerboard. I also liked the fact that it came with warm sounding Thomastik Vision Strings.

Appearance

It has a very attractive spirit varnish and the wood of the neck is very different. The wood has dark marks either from the wood itself or burn marks. It's chin rest is unique in the fact that it isn't the usual color of black for a student violin.

It has that new violin smell.

Customer Service

Shar is a very prominent music company. Their customer service is very helpful and friendly. The violin itself was under a seven day trial with a total refund and an extended warranty (free) for 30 days.

The case is is not that great and, its giving up the ghost (small rip, I exaggerate) after just 3 years. However, the Thomastik Vision Strings that come standard are crisp, if you can describe strings like so. Wittner tailpiece is a plus as well. Strings only lasted a year before snapping off.

It is a very reliable student violin and worth every red penny. It's good to grow on. Its a Romanian workshop-made violin that is undoubtedly well made.
