I notice the grain of tha cleats are cross-grained with tha top wood. They look to be maple tho, I would'a expected spruce to spruce, & maple to maple. Is maple used exclusively ? I had an old Storioni with cleats all the way thru tha back joint seam.

The cleats are supposed to be cross grain to the top, and they are spruce. The person who did these cleats also prefers to use willow for back cleats rather than maple.
