Two Highland Scottish reels from Niel Gow. This is all me. The tenor banjo is anachronistic, but,,,,
I have to use my imagination to assemble the tenor of this music. Dunno if it sounded like that in the 1700's or not, banjo excluded. I love the Tannahill Weavers. Fiddle, guitar, tenor banjo, bodhran(played with hand, not tipper)

Just wanted this to be simple and sweet,,,kept to the tune basics,,didn't play around. I started it, so I set the tempo, and Steve came in very tastefully, I think,,and the tempo held pretty well.

This, and others put up, date back to 2002, when Steve Schmidt and I first started recording stuff on my Tascam 788. He'd start, using the Wildwood Troubador I subsequently sold him, and so he'd set the pace, and we'd lock into a fairly good groove, tempo wise. This, if memory serves, is the first one we did. I probably put the SM57 in front of the banjo, and I"d likely use the Rode NT1. The fiddle and banjo were done together, first, and I'd come back later and add in, by overdub, whatever else is in there. I've been waiting for the green light on AAC's, but in lieu of that, I converted an AAC to MP3. I think the AAC's have better quality, but, what the hey. I hope converting an MP3 from AAC is no worse than converting an MP3 from an AIFF, which I normally do, if working MP3, but I loaded this CD all AAC, so have no AIFF's of it.

Probably the 2nd or 3rd tune Steve and I recorded. I announce it,,and after about 3 minutes and 15 seconds or so bring it to a halt. You hear Steve say 'I wanted to keep goin', and I say 'I'm sorry man',,and that sort of gives you an idea of the almost Zen thing we'd get going,,but I wanted to stop it before it got too long.

This version was done during the last several of Steve and my numerous sessions, and I'm posting it to contrast to the other. I took some extreme liberty with the B part, which I start with, and you can definitely tell I'm AEAE for sure.

This is an exercise in imperfection. You know how a second can take an eternity? That happened when Steve started the banjo part, and I had this sickening realization of just how fast I was gonna have to go with this one. After the eternity of that second, I took a deep breath, and lit in. Start was a little rocky, and you'll notice I hung on the 2nd phrase twice. I was still thinking about it.

Old,,2002, or so. Just me. Two guitars, fiddle. I'm alot Scottish, so it's the one 'ethnic' style i feel most comfortable with. Seagull Grand parlor size guitar, my Sandner,, the one I'm holding in the pic.

Steve and me, back when. Banjo, guitar, bass, and I doubled the fiddles. You can hear a bit of harmony on the B part..the doubling was more inadvertent than not, and I don't remember why I did it. Oh well.

This is recent, in the last couple of years. Just me, fiddle into ribbon mike, Breedlove guitar, Tupan drum. Hey Tuti Teti aka Scots Wha Hae, Dunira Lodge, Baille Na Grandach aka Grantoun on Spey. A bit long, but it's three tunes. Pretty much like all the Scots stuff I do, from Niel Gow. Grantoun on Spey was his stomping ground. Done on the Tascam 2488 MKII,,,my backup recorder now,,before I went into the box with computers and Logic and Ableton Live 7.

This is a song I did a couple of years ago. Most times, it's modal minor, but I'm doing it major,,,got that from someone,,,but changed it up entirely to my version. Vocals, fiddle, guitar, banjo, drum. To me, the Appalachian South is an ancient, haunted place, dripping with this je ne sais quoi, of ancient peoples, before we came, and I wanted to give it this feeling, and the drum especially for the Spirit of the Native Americans(I'm part Creek), who have inhabited this region for time out of mind,,,and Melungeons, and whoever else. Have you ever read Manley Wade Wellman's Silver John series,,,or about the Bell Witch?
