West Fork Gals, Needle Case, Fly Away My Pretty Little Miss. After the first tune I drop the fiddle and pick up the bass.

Barn dance versions of The Big Scioty and Big Foot, featuring the All Volunteer String Band, with me on bass. To compare versions, contrast with other posted versions of The Big Scioty, and Big Foot versus lg's post of Doc Corn's tune, where you will find comments revealing the politically incorrect original title of Doc Corn's (Big Footed ...) tune.

Bruce Sedloff (bsed here at FHO) and your friendly Hangout FiddlerFaddler play Big Scioty here as a duet. We each play the respective versions that we had previously learned in July during the first annual Goatskin Jam, and I was delighted that they harmonized nicely with each other. Unfortunately I had forgotten my digital recorder at a jam two weeks before, and I didn't get it back until the next day.
So when I went to the Bristol Renaissance Faire about five weeks later, Bruce and his beloved Anne agreed that I could bring some savory chow for a nice evening's supper, and while the rice was cooking, we could reprise Big Scioty. So here is the fruit of our efforts, played at a relatively relaxed pace so as to provide time for the listener to relish the harmonization, especially during the cadences.

A festive medley of Deck the Halls, It's Almost Day, and Chicken Reel. Played by the All Volunteer String Band. Anne Jones sings the lead on It's Almost Day. I'm on the bass. We also have a dobro, a squeeze box of some variety, a hammered dulcimer, a mandolin, three guitars, three fiddles and at least three banjos.

This is a recording of the All Volunteer String Band at a barn dance band Saturday evening, November 15, 2008. This version is straight out of the compendium of old time songs and fiddle tunes, Dear Old Illinois. It was supposed to be the fourth tune in a medley of 'A' tunes, but we only needed three for the corresponding dance, so we did this one as an instrumental. The crowd was enthusiastic and you can hear clapping and some hoots and hollers.

This is Alan Jabbour leading a jam after a house concert in Batavia, Illinois October 30, 2008. Our local fiddlers did a fine job on this one - it's a local favorite around here. The banjos did a great job as well. There were also two guitars, a mandolin, and me on bass.

Another fun, English holiday tune, recorded 2000 AD. Me on recorder, Tim Daniels on fiddle, faddle, mandolin, and lap harp. We alternate between melody and variations, with Tim developing some interesting progressions in the harmony parts. We finish by simultaneously reprising almost every fool thing that came before that wouldn't clash, thanks to the wonders of multi-track recording, and the cut-and-paste capabilities of Cakewalk. Merry Christmas, y'all!

A great polka in D, served up barn dance style by the All Volunteer String Band. No bells and whistles, but we have lots of banjos, two hammered dulcimers, a smattering of mandolins, some guitars and some kind of a squeeze box. I'm on the bass. I had previously posted the title as Dennis Murphey's Polka - my mistake. I'll dig for a MP3 of Dennis Murphey's and post that when I find it.

As done by the All Volunteer String Band, which is associated with the Plank Road Folk Music Society (www.plankroad.org). I'm playing the bass, so you'll need decent speakers to hear it. I'll post a totally different version of this tune with me on the fiddle when I get a chance to record it.

I somehow made this English holiday tune sound Andean by using recorders. I didn't own a foeddle (bass) yet, so I plucked my foddle (cello) for a bass ostinato. Tim Daniels of Leavenworth, Kansas (my pal who inspired me to learn the fiddle) played fiddle, faddle (viola), mandolins, a lap zither (kind of like an autoharp sans chording bars), and I also played four sizes of recorders, an alto flute (sorry, I don't have a bass recorder) and guitar. Merry Christmas, y'all!

This is a barn-dance band version by the All Volunteer String Band. The fiddles break out into 3-part harmony the second time through. See the post of the same tune by Midwest_Fiddler for more tune information. I'm on the bass.

At Lynn Garren's recent Fabulous Birthday Party, before the caller called and dancers danced, the Elderbulies augmented by Paul Tyler on Fiddle and Chirps Smith on mandolin played this waltz. I forgot to ask one of the musicians the name of this waltz. Please identify it for me if you know it because I would like to learn it. Thanks!
FLASH - Chirps Smith remembers the name of this tune as the Red Fox Waltz. Please let me know if you know it by another name.

This version is closer to Pop Wagner's than the one in Dear Old Illinois (www.dearoldillinois.com), but I like it. As played by the All Volunteer String Band, with me on the bass. I can hardly wait to hear how Chirps renders this one!
