Recorded live at Buell's Orchard in Eastford, CT, 10-13-08. I'm on fiddle, Paul Harty is on guitar, and my son Eric Eid Reiner is on piano. We didn't rehearse at all, just had fun playing tunes together, with arrangements on the fly!

Recorded live at Buell's Orchard in Eastford, CT, 10-13-08. Paul Harty sings this one really well! I'd love to post more vocals, but most are not public domain tunes. I'm on mandolin (a close relative of fiddle!), Paul is on guitar and harmonica, and my son Eric Eid Reiner is on piano.

I'm on fiddle, with Pete Anick on guitar, recorded 19 years ago. Pretty close to Eck Robertson's version from 1922 (two parts in Bb and one in Gm), but it's a tough one to play well! Some fiddlers regularize the tune by omitting measure 4 of the 9-measure C part. Done Gone has been credited to Matt Brown, a Texas Panhandle fiddler stranded outside Amarillo and ignored by a car that zoomed by him.

I learned the first tune from my other son Andy Reiner, and figured why not pair it with the usual Blackberry Blossom... Garfield's has a wild modal feel to it.

A very quick demo of Georgia Shuffle bowing, with downbow on the offbeat and upbow everywhere else. u u D u u u D u is one measure of up and down bows. Here I play saw stroke, Nashville Shuffle, and Georgia Shuffle - first on a scale (a good way to practice!) and then on a simple version of Sally Goodin. This pattern and others are explained in my book Oldtime Fiddling Across America. Enjoy!

Written by Pete Anick and Dave Reiner, this was recorded by Dave, Andy Reiner, and Eric Eid-Reiner on Eric's first CD, "Grand Tour: Traditional Music on Piano." We wrote this on electric mandolin with the reverb turned up, so little ghost notes bounced around the room, leading to the name "Ghost." The twin fiddle parts are transcribed in my book, Anthology of Fiddle Styles.

Cross-tuned GDGD, learned from the playing of the Balfa Brothers. A rough English translation of the title is The Drunkard's Sorrow Waltz. The wildly modal noting contributes to the lonesome sound of this Cajun tune. On guitar is my friend Pete Anick.

Learned from the playing of the Highwoods String Band. This is part of the tradition of "execution farewell" tunes, traceable back to 1912 or before. My friend Alex Demas is on banjo, and Pete Anick on guitar. Alex runs the Banjo and Fiddle Contest every year in September in Lowell, Massachusetts.

Cross-tuned DDAD, learned from the playing of Texas fiddler Benny Thomasson. My friend Pete Anick is backing me up on guitar. Pete's a columnist for Fiddler magazine, BTW. The gentle bobbing of the melody and the long, haunting strokes conjure up the peaceful image of darkness descending over the water.

At Fiddle Hell in Groton, MA last year, we had about 70 fiddlers playing in the main room on Saturday night. Each one played a short tune, and we also threw in a bunch of common tunes that we could play together. So here's the sound of 70 fiddles, 1 piano, 1 mandolin, and 1 guitar :-) Join us in 2010 (Nov. 12-14)!

A very short version that I learned from the playing of Dudley Vance. I'm on fiddle and Pete Anick's on guitar; we recorded this for our book Oldtime Fiddling Across America. Doug Dorschug (DougD) has a fine version of the tune on his music page, with him on banjo and Red Vance (Dudley's son) on fiddle. I always figured the A part starts the fox chase, the B part is the pack yelping, and the C part is the sad ending of the cornered fox.
