bsed has made 67 recent additions to Fiddle Hangout

Interests:
[Teaching] [Jamming] [Socializing] [Helping]

Occupation: WASTEWATER LAB

Gender: Male

Age: 57

My Instruments:
I have a Strad copy from Grandpa. I also have a fiddle that was made for me by Deborah-Helen Viator in Eunice, LA, which is my "tuned-down" Cajun fiddle. My first fiddle (which I still have & is still my best) is one that I payed only $150 for in 1980. The tone is balanced all the way across, but sounds particularly rich in the bass. The story I like to tell about it is that Mike Seeger once offered to buy it off me.

Favorite Bands/Musicians:
I like anybody that plays Old-time and Cajun. Favorites include Kenny Jackson of the Rhythm Rats, Double Decker String Band, Rafe Stefanini, Clyde Davenport, Tommy Jarrell, Charlie Bowman, Al Hopkins & His Bucklebusters (aka The Hillbillies), Melvin Wine, Ernie Carpenter and Chirps Smith.

I wrote this song some years back after a visit to the Fiddler's Gathering. It attempts to portray some of the history of the place. There's a monument in the park that gives some of the salient details of the fighting that happened there.

I got this tune from Jim Lansford, who cited Bill Caten as his source. Tuning is std. I played through the tune twice, and then slowed it down a bit so you could catch the notes and bowing. The tune is in 3 parts, key of G.

I think Steve Earl recorded this song (Don't know if he wrote it). We've been performing it for well over a year, and it has become one of my favorites. This cut was recorded in Glenview IL on 2/7/10 (yes, it was Super Sunday and we still managed to fill the room somehow) by my band Loose Change & Friends. Ron & Marcy Novit (banjo & guitar/vocal, res.), Bill Tong (autoharp), Lee Mishkin (bass), Doris Lee Dutton (clog dancer), John Daugherty (mandolin) and myself (fiddle).

I learned this tune from some folks I was jamming with at the Wheatland Festival a while back. I think it was called Tomahawk, but I've heard something that might dispute that that's even the proper title for this tune. I think it was played by someone like an Arthur Smith or Tommy Magness or Howdy Forster (Forester?) on the radio in the '30s or 40's, but my memory isn't good, so I sure would like your help on this!! I play it in cross 'A' tuning.
