Very spontaneous, unrehearsed recording of guitar, fiddle, & vocal. I needed to take a break from work. (If you detect an attitude, you're right. Forgive me!) I dedicate this tune to the declining value of my retirement investments. Side note: I had never tried to play this on fiddle before today, and I haven't played it on my guitar in a long, long time either. Sometimes music just happens, though. Fun to improvise on! I'll work on putting together a more solid fiddle break. Then I'll re-record and re-post.

Fiddler's Dream

Video: http://www.fiddle4fun.org/video/Fiddlers_Dream/ This one is fiddle and banjo only. At the end of this school year I was really looking forward to being able to play my fiddle whenever I wanted over summer break. I finally pulled out my banjo yesterday and recorded the backup for this tune. This morning I practiced fiddle to the looping backup like about 50 times over and over again while my wife was out running errands. The last time through I turned on my little recorder and got this. I even had enough time afterward to clean up the house and finish a couple of honey-do's before Mrs. Fiddlescratcher came home. I think she's on to me, though... Dave

Hard-driving gospel bluegrass song I wrote last year. Yes, I played everything- fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, bass. I think the fiddle break and fills came out pretty good in this one.
Don't laugh at my stuffy nose vocals. In heaven I'll have a perfect voice and perfect pitch.

Guitar and fiddle only. I learned this from the playing of a totally awesome young fiddler named Hali Pekron. She was backed up by an awesome guitar player named Jim French. I don't know where they got this tune. The tracks were recorded on my handheld mp3 recorder and then mixed on my Mac. Every day I discover something new when I mess around with all those settings and doodads in my recording software. I don't know what most of that stuff does. Yesterday I discovered that reversing the phase of one channel of a stero track can make a significant difference in the sound of the recording. This is a remix of a previous version. I've been working on this tune for 6 months on and off. It has been very challenging. The guitar backup alone has been tough. I can finally play the chords at this slow speed without getting my fingers all tangled up. As far as the fiddle... well, I'm still working on the bowing and intonation. My goal is to be able to play this tune smoother and faster with better intonation by the end of 2012. If I improve I'll repost.

I love this simple but sweet melody. Guitar and fiddle only. Recorded into my laptop as 16-bit 44.1kHz AIFF mono tracks through a Tascam US-144 microphone USB input interface; mixed in Cubase LE. It sure is fun messing around with this multitrack recording stuff.

Quite some time ago TimK posted a great recording of this tune here on the Hangout. I had never heard of it before, and Tim's playing made it immediately become one of those "Wow, I gotta learn this one" tunes. Well, over time I forgot about it... until yesterday, that is, when I stumbled across the tune again on YouTube. Then I remembered, and I HAD to pull out the fiddle and learn it then and there. I stayed up last night listening to different recordings and videos of it, and I finally learned. Probably drove my dear wife nuts, although she's too sweet to say it. After I got home from church today I figured out the chords and recorded a backup to practice with. So, this is a recording of me practicing along with that backup. What an outstanding tune. I guess it's quite famous, so that just shows my ignorance. But it's a new favorite, for sure! Dave

I highly recommend getting the recording of this by Kenny Baker and Bill Monroe. This is one of my favorite bluegrass tunes. I laid down the bass track for this version a few weeks ago, then last night added the guitar, banjo, mandolin, and fiddle tracks. Mixed it all together with Logic software. Enjoy!

It's Sunday, and I just got home from church. My wife is off to work, and I should be doing report cards right now. But I couldn't resist trying out this new portable mp3 recorder I got in the mail yeserday. Haven't decided if I'll keep it, as it costs $300, but it overdubs tracks, adds reverb, and seems to work quite nicely. Fiddle and mandolin only, without variations.

I recorded this one on my laptop at the same time I recorded "Road to Columbus" ( I had the whole house to myself for a couple of days while the wife was away on a ladies retreat). This isn't really a fiddle tune, of course, so I debated whther or not to upload it. But I do like the fiddle break after the third verse, so I guess that technically, it qualifies. FYI: Wikipedia says this about the song: "... an American song first published in the 1850s under the name "When I Saw Sweet Nellie Home" ... composed and arranged by John Fletcher. Frances Kyle is said to have written the lyrics... Sometimes the song has been referred to as "Aunt Dinah's Quilting Party." A Civil War song, "Mother, I Am Going," was sung to the tune of "Seeing Nellie Home.'" Dave

This is my first upload in quite a while due to getting a "frozen shoulder" last October. Geez, I couldn't even lift up my fiddle for a couple of months. The doc says I need to give it at least a year before we consider surgery. Things are looking up- I'm about 50% back to normal now and am happy to be able to play again. This is a fun one in the key of C.

Mandolin, fiddle, and vocal. You know how you sometimes find yourself pulled in by a particular tune? You play it over and over until even your wife starts humming the melody. And after a while she says, "That's a nice song, honey, but can you please take out the trash?" Well, that's kind of how it's been with this one. I've been playing it on my mandolin all winter break. I decided to record it this morning and force myself to let go of it. Hope you all enjoy it.
