So after a couple of years on Claudette I decided that I could do with a second fiddle, I got a bonus from work this year (Woot woot etc) and decided to have a shop around. I fancied an electric and I fancied a 5 string. Judging from the prices I have seen before I had priced both out of my range. I had been half heartedly looking for old fiddles to "do up" at reasonable prices on ebay and had seen some interesting shaped electric/silent violins at under £100 ($150ish at present). I spent some time browsing and selected several to show my wife for her opinion (Bad plan as she doesn't think like me and chose one I had already discounted. I was drawn to one or two from an eshop called song-maker which on viewing the shop had a wide selection of random and sometimes ornate parts (violin and others) and some funky looking electric 4/4 4,5 & 6 strings. I was a bit concerned buying from China, but the price was 1/6 of the cost of similar style fiddles. I selected a red assymetric cut out 5 string electric for $70ish with $40ish (rounding up) delivery which came to just over £100.
Each day I tried not to think about it as I was anticipating a long wait.
4 days later a wedge shaped parcel arrived an in it a splendid looking case & fiddle. There was also rosin, an octagonal bow (still not sure about that), a 9v battery (for the pre amp), big jack lead for traditional amps and the worlds cheapest headphones (given how great everything else looked this is a small criticism when taken as a whole).
I have been playing her for a week now and although I am a bit of a fiddle pleb, she seems fine to me, and I am enjoying the freedom of the extra string. M is also pleased as there is a reduction in the noise she has to endure.
I still have to name her. I have ordered a fiberglass bow & 2 new shoulder rests of Amazon (I had to appease Claudette somehow, she gets jealous).
I have been too busy finding time to play to blog for a while, but I gots me an eye phone, so I will kick start myself to post more often.
