violin is a demanding master (or mistress).
One can put it in a closet-- in fact, I did for nearly 30 years. I could pick it up and play for special occasions, but I want to play it well. I can't stand it if I am not in tune, so it demands practice-- not just occasionally, but 5+ hours a week, just to maintain skills.
I am struggling with the battle in my mind- to play for fun, to learn new techniques, to put in the time required to improve. Do scales? Do etudes? Gain skills? Learn new repertoire?
It is fun. It is hard work. It is a challenge. Don't forget the first one, Helen, it is fun.
