Feeling a Calico Phase Coming On...

Saturday, January 26, 2013 @11:00:36 AM

We had another great Portland Old Time Music Gathering last weekend.  14th annual!  This year I had eight folk from Victoria, British Columbia, staying at my place.  They had a great session going on in the bar at the Scottish Rite Center on Saturday.  Bob Nisbet caught this video of them playing a Calico version of Billy in the Low Ground:

Sounds so good!  Couldn't help but spend some time this morning learning it.  Up to now I've only learned one tune in Calico tuning, J.S. Price's Cripple Creek that I learned from the Canote Brothers' CD Dogs in the Dishes.  But there's been a few piling up that I've been wanting to learn including the version of Cotton Eyed Joe on Meghan Dudle's CD You Are Always in My Dreams, the version of White River on Betse Ellis' CD Don't You Want to Go?, and the version of Lost Indian on the Canote Brothers' CD Calico Pie.  Now that I'm sitting here with my fiddle tuned AEac#, I think I feel a Calico phase coming on!

:-)
