Advice On Band Name
Saturday, June 20, 2009 @9:40:08 AM
I have been wanting to start a bluegrass band for some time now. I mean a hard-driving, traditional bluegrass band. No progressive traces at all.
Anyways, my main problem is I cant thing of a name. I want a traditional sounding name.
I came up with:
1. The Sourwood Mountain Boys
Any ideas? |

I am lookin at the names of your favorite bands and Mountain Boys seem to come up a few times. I think I would try to be a little more unique..... The Bluegrass Express heck I dunno seeing that you are gonna be hard drivin I would want something to express that Idea |

Sometimes a serendipitous moment gives you the name. And sometimes it even gives you the BAND. whether you want one or not.

I'm originally from SC, and I know there are no mountains in Horry County! How about the Palmetto Wranglers? "Lost in the Low-Country"? The Waccamaw Ramblers? The Palmetto Hill Boys? I dunno - just throwing out crazy ideas... |

That is one of the toughest things to do. To find a name that matches the style of music played, with the musicians involved, that everyone can agree on. How about "The Piney wood Stumpjumpers" ? |

Anybody in the band from nearby Galivant's Ferry or Poplar Hill? Those names would ring nicely in a band name. Poplar Hill Boys? Poplar Hill Pepsteppers? Galivant's Ferry Boys? Galivant's Ferry Ramblers? Galivant's Ferry Gallivanters? ;^D

My wife gave me a suggestion once, and I've never been able to use it, but I LOVE this name: the Noise Pickers! |

By the way, nothing wrong with the Sourwood Mountain Boys, but I am just trying to picture sourwoods growing in the low country....however, nothing wrong with imagining a cool mountain with the sourwoods turning red - especially when it's 95 degrees in the shade! |

Lookin' at Google maps of Aynor, there's lots of interesting town names around you. Any of the members from one of these like "Baxter Forks", "Baker Crossroads", "Dog Bluff" or "Ketchuptown"? Granted, I don't know the nature or anything about these little towns, but it might be nice to take some of the local terrain as a start.
Our band Goosetown String Band was named after a neighborhood in Iowa City where the banjo player lives. Seemed fitting.
Good luck. It's as hard as naming a baby... |
