An amzing evening at Ft. Branch, North Carolina

Wednesday, November 06, 2013 @5:42:27 AM

This past weekend, I traveled to Hamilton, North Carolina to participate in a Civil War reenactment at  Ft. Branch an earthen fort constructed on a bluff on the Roanoke River and mounted with huge naval guns. Its purpose was to defend a railroad bridge up river from Hamilton that was a major supply route for Richmond, Va. The naval guns were to prevent Federal gun boats from getting up river and destroying the rail bridge. While playing period music Saturday afternoon with my two partners, we met a local group that was to play for the period dance that evening. We had a great time playing period music together and were invited to join them to play for the evening dance. The dance found the reenactors dressed in their finest formal wear. Gentlemen in dress uniforms and ladies in wonderful hoop skirts. We played the Virginia reel, polkas, waltzes and other period dances for an enthusiastic crowd. It was wonderful evening that I will long remember but it doesn't end there. Perhaps the best thing that happened was something that shows just how great our country is. Ft. Branch is not far from Bentonville, NC. The last major battle of the Civil War was fought there two weeks before Lee's surrender at Appomatix Court House. The fiddle player in the local band's great, great grandfather fought with a NC regiment in the battle of Bentonville.  My guitar playing friend's great great grand father fought in the battle with the 73rd Ohio. Almost 150yrs. later, on almost the same ground, their grandsons were making music together instead of making war ! To me that says a lot about who we are as a people and a country! It was an amazing, memorable evening.
