2015 update

Thursday, September 3, 2015 @9:40:06 AM

I see that is has been a bit over a year since my last blog post so an update is in order. I have been active with my Civil War reenacting. Part of that has been my joining a group of reenactors who specialize in a 1860's style minstrel / medicine  show. It includes some Shakespear readings, Mark Twain style humor, comic interaction amongst the players and of course, minstrel songs and the sale of "Snake Oil".

I have also been doing a presentation on the roll of the Civil War musician and his music. It's available to schools, historical societies, service clubs, Civil War round tables and VFW & American Legions. It is done in the first person as if the war has just ended and includes popular, patriotic and folk songs of the Civil War.

I decided to take a year off from contest fiddling and instead have gotten into judging them. I've really enjoyed this new aspect of contest fiddling and will continue to do more of it. I may just retire from competition all together and focus on judging. Then again I may get the itch to compete now and then. Time will tell.

I have also taken on the challenge of learning to play the pedal steel guitar. Wow, what a demanding instrument. It has ten strings tuned to an E Nine chord, three foot pedals and four knee levers. It takes both hands, both knees and both feet to play it !  In my opinion the violin and the pedal steel guitar are the most expressive of musical instruments.

Finally, I have produced three new CD's this year. One is a live recording from the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Bentonville, NC with the combined period bands of the Huckleberry Brothers, The Camptown Shakers, David Kincaid and myself. One is a collection of  some of my favorite, classic country songs and finally, I've just finished a collection of western music. Classic songs from Gene Autry, Marty Robbins, Sons of the Pioneers etc.

So I am keeping busy in retirement with my various musical and historical interests and that brings this blog up to date.
