Dawn of a new era?
Monday, March 26, 2012 @5:12:20 PM
Yesterday I restrung Dawn (my best guitar) after carving a new bridge out of a spare piece of fence post. I know that I will have to replace it with a proper one eventually, but she sounds good. It has been about 3 years since I have had any of my guitars functional and I have forgotten a lot. The instinct is still there and I am sure that most of what I knew will return.
I now have a guitar (Dawn), fiddle (Claudette), banjo (Dixie), uke (Mini), saw and concertina (both unnamed as yet) by my lounge seat ready for action.
I have been recording base tracks on garageband on the ipad and am trying to string different instruments together on my own ideas (my songs are either depressing or wrong, I favour the wrongness). As part of this venture I recorded myself on the fiddle as a backup to my banjo. This forced me away from the key of D which I now realise I tend to revert to naturaly. I have a vague knowledge of musical theory and can hold my own with the lingo, and yet I tend to get lost when others expect me to understand how to "Do the sums in my head" as it were.
All that aside, I sucked. I am not disheartened by this as Claudette was not expensive and has not been set up since leaving the factory. I am planning to get her set up when I get her re stringed (whenever that is). The choice of notes on the improv background was good, but my tone was not great and the timbre of the sound was rough. Playing around with the settings smoothed some of it out (cheating I know) and I am far from even considering giving up.
How much is down to me and how much is Claudette? I guess we will find out when I get her set up. Also the frame of my hand falls pretty naturally on 3 strings, but seems out of joint on the A string. It's like the positions are 1/8 inch or so nearer the head of the fiddle. I am trying to correct this with focus on hold and elbow position, but it still feels strange. Time to restring perhaps?

Hey, Dog! I just passed the 3 year mark (practicing every day), with good fiddles and I still suck when I try recording. I got aways to go, but like you, I'm keeping at it, trying to improve my tone. Don't give up!

I still have the occasional day when I have to turn the tuner on while I'm playing a tune because everything just sounds WRONG. Weirdly enough, I'm usually just a fraction of a fraction of a fraction off the mark. I guess that means my ear is getting better, but I'm still trying to figure out if that's really a good thing, while knowing it has to be, if that makes any sense.
