Back from our Tour!

Sunday, February 07, 2010 @2:10:57 PM

Hello everyone,                                                                                    February 6, 2010

What a nice time of year this is. Spring draws near and soon festivals and other activities will be nudging us out of hibernation but some of the relaxed pace of the wintertime still remains. There is time to learn a new tune, be creative or just be with one’s own thoughts for a spell. May your Feb/March be good and musical.

I just came back from a westcoast CD release tour with the Haints Old-time Stringband (Pharis and Jason Romero and myself) with special guest, Carl Jones who added a whole new musical element to our group with his tasteful mandolin playing, cheerful stage patter and evocative original songs. To hear this fine fellow visit his website: www.dittyville.com There are also many new videos people have posted of the Haints from our recent tour on Youtube.

This time the band traveled from San Francisco through Oakland and Arcata onwards to Portland where we performed a concert, dance and did workshops at the Portland Old-time Gathering (a blast as usual!). Then we continued through to Seattle, Bellingham where we played some nice concerts before crossing into Canada to perform in Vancouver, Victoria and on Gabriola Island. Two weeks went by in the blink of an eye.
If you do not yet have a copy of our new CD, Shout Monah, and would like one (free shipping in the US) please visit: www.thehaints.com or my site www.hickoryjack.com

The weather out west this January felt tropical after all the cold and white stuff in Virginia and the band really enjoyed getting to see so many old-time music fans, musicians, friends and family along the way. We learned several new tunes/songs as well. Other highlights along the tour included visiting antique shops along the way (an oh so practical vintage, metal woodpecker, toothpick picker-upper now graces my bookshelf and Carl found himself some amazing music from the 1800’s). We also took time to walk through a red wood forest,  along some beautiful beaches (ah…the ocean), participate in some great post concert jam sessions (yippee!), and visit Hank Schwartz’ California home to see his inspiring banjo collection (specializing in many old Fairbanks among other gems). Thanks Hank! Everyone went home happy and inspired. Phew!

We all feel very fortunate that we get to travel and share our love of old-time music wherever we go and that we always meet others who are equally passionate about Southern music. On that note…I’d best close and wish everyone more time for music in their life. Remember – don’t work too hard. Do more of the stuff you will want to do after you retire. We will not look back and wish we spent more time working on a computer or cleaning the house. Many Happy Tunes, Erynn

"woodpecker, toothpick picker-upper"! Now, you'll HAVE to write a tune about this, right?

The Shout Monah CD is wonderful. I think I like it better than Calico! I can't wait for your next.
