My Instruments: One fiddle is handmade by Gerald Stockdale of Springfield MO in 1960. A hard used but wonderfully sounding D. Salzard that's about 130 years old, with a one piece back to die for, and also handmade. And an early 20th c. German Strad which is plain-plain-plain until you put the bow to her, when she turns into Cinderella at the Ball, with Dark Rich Tone. And I've got a 4th fiddle that's a german trade fiddle, a project I haven't gotten to. I also own a Jackson Guldan and a 3/4 German fiddle, both of which need work, and will probably be fixed and sold eventually.
Favorite Bands/Musicians: First and Foremost, the Gypsy King himself, Stefane Grapelli, Stuff Smith, John Hartford, April Verch, Regina Carter, Joe Venuti, Buddy Thomas, Chubby Wise, Owen Chapman, Dwight Lamb, Liz Carroll, Tommy Jarrell, Lester McCumbers, Elmer Rich. Snake Chapman, Ed Haley, Jehile Kirkhuff

Today I spent most of the day with Carl Baron.
We walked a farmers' market, talked to lots of folks, including my friend Maggio, the violin dealer, stocked up on food and goodies, then we played out behind one of the buildings. It was warm enough out to play outside, which was WONDERFUL. I needed to feel the sun on my face and make some sweet sounds, and Carl was the right company for the day.
We then went to visit with my friend Lisa, where we drank hot cider and serenaded her some. Then we played outside some more, in her great yard, under some ancient fir trees.
We played Greasy Coat and Cluck Old Hen. We played Oldtime Fire on the Mountain and Pretty Little Shoes. We played Old Yeller Dog Come Trottin' Through the Meeting House and Squirrel Heads and Gravy. Then we played some G tunes: Down the River, and Bullfrog on a Puncheon Floor. Back in A we played Tombigbee Waltz, Double File, Old Bunch of Keys, and Paddy on the Pike. And we played one of Melvin Wine's tunes, Cold Frosty Morning. We switched to D and played Lowery's Quadrille. Carl taught me one whose name now escapes me.
It was a great day out in the sunshine and the warm. It was sweater weather here, which was just wonderful! The snow is finally fading, and spring is finally on its way. I'm glad I got to welcome my favorite season with my newest friend. Makes me feel like there might be some good changes in the air.
