I'm the member, but it's my son who fiddles -- I'm just trying to keep up with his needs! So, I'm posting here with his queries (about products, tunes, technique) and his audiofiles. I can't take credit for any of the talent!
Roger is 15 years old. He started by playing violin in school orchestra, and began fiddling at age 11. He's almost entirely self-taught -- he learns mostly by listening (to live players or recordings) and jamming. He's usually the only young person at the local old-time music gatherings, and people here have been really helpful and supportive. When he was 13, he put together a string band (whose other members were all in their 50s and 60s) to play a contra dance, and now he plays regularly (with these folks and others) for dances, festivals, and other events, both locally and elsewhere in Missouri.
