I have achance to buy a Gibson violin in excellent condition. The back has birds eye maple and the top is tight spruce. Made in kalamazoo. Anybody got an idea on value?

Just google on Gibson violins. These are not especially sought after, rare or valuable. So far as I know they were not even made by Gibson.

There's one on eBay for $225 with two days to go. There seems to be a line of new "Gibson" violins as well, that are quite cheap.

Gruhn's used ot have one of these. Don't know if they still do. The one they had was owned (if I remember right) by ranger Woody Paul.

Sometimes those eBay auctions get a little hysterical and out of hand, but often they are a good representative of fair market value.

You have to watch the auctions over time. Ebay prices have a seasonal element to them as well, that may not exist in retail shops. Certain things sell better at certain times of the year. Fiddles seem to be one of those things.
