I just caught myself reading a post on FHO while playing the fiddle! My mind was busy reading and thinking only about the post.....and all the while, my hands were playing The Star of the County Down by themselves. Amazing how our minds can move on to the next level of control and leave the well practiced behaviors to the unconcious. I've had this happen on guitar before, but this is the first time with fiddle....wow.

Well, if I can <daydream> while playing a tune, I find it's a good sign that the tune has been comitted to deep memory, and is suitable for jamming, gigging, whatever. But I never tried to <read> anything while playing fiddle, 'cept maybe a tune list!!!!

Back when I watched TV, I would do that, and play at the same time . . . then have no idea what I'd just played.

Cool! Now maybe you should try reading music while you are playing. LOL

In that 2000 PBS special about the art of the violin, Ivry Gitlis said he would put a comic book on the stand in his room, and improvise while reading it. His mom thought he was practising.
