Hello ,
I have been working with , " Kevin Burke's Learn to play Irish Fiddle " DVD 's , and on the seconded DVD he plays a set of Gavotte's no names of the tunes are given. He is what I know so far , They come form Brittany or Brenton that is in Northern France. Brittany is one of the Six Celtic regions. The Gavotte's are in 4/4 time , but the rhythm is grouped as 3 , 3, 2 equaling two measures .
So I know a little , but can you correct or add to my understanding.
Thank You John

There are a number of early Renaissance dances that are current in regional styles in France, among them are the gavotte, galliard, and bouree. Probably others as these dances are going through a revival of their own. Last October I joined a local fiddler in playing a bouree for dancing at a dinner party in south-central France (Auvergne). They pushed back the furniture and everyone joined in.
