The violinist Rachel Barton Pine talks about violin building, maintenance, and restoration with Chicago luthier Paul Becker. He discusses some fascinating matters, including his belief that he can sense whether or not an instrument has been consistently played in tune. Also, he gives some practical tips on keeping one's instrument in good shape and relays anecdotes about salvaging fiddles that were apparently beyond repair.

Thanks for sharing that! I like hearing from luthiers so much, I looked to see if she had any other luthier interviews,
and she had one with Jan van Rooyen:

I'm glad you liked it. I was afraid it might strike some as "too violiny."

Some luthiers seem to cultivate an air of mystery, probably as a marketing technique, and I was wondering to what extent Paul Becker does this, if he does it at all.

The Becker shop last year moved to a space in the Chicago Loop once occupied by the Chicago violin dealer William Lewis & Son, which is where my fiddle was purchased in the mid-1970's. I'm tempted to go there for a routine checkup some day. It would almost be like bringing my baby home.
